History
of the city
|
|
| People began living in the Sanda area more than
10,000 years ago. Reportedly, in the 8th century AD, a temple
later associated with Konshin-ji Temple was built in the area
that is currently a neighborhood of Yashiki-machi, and a town
formed around it. The name Sanda is thought to have been first
used in the 14th century. Also at this time, the castle, which
became the core of the area, was built. Starting in the 15th
century, Sanda began developing both as an administrative hub
based in the castle, and as a trade and economic center with
rice, lumber, and other products supplied from the fertile agricultural
districts surrounding the city. In the 17th century, Sanda flourished
as a 36,000-koku fief (producing 36,000 koku of rice). With
the opening of the railroad in the late 19th century, it further
grew as the central area of what was then Arima-gun. It was
incorporated as a city in July 1958 and has continued to prosper
to the present. |
